Young Authors

Young Authors is your chance to become a published author!  All submissions are due to your teacher by March 1st.  Please follow all guidelines carefully:

  • All work must be original work from the students and from the current year.
  • Books must be submitted in final form by March 1st to your teacher.
  • Each school will choose 15 books.
  • The books, including colored illustration should be the following lengths:
    • K: Five pages (one sentence or more per page – illustrated)
    • 1st: Five pages (three sentences or more per page – illustrated) 
    • 2nd: Five pages (five sentences or more per page – illustrated) 
    • 3rd: Seven pages (eight sentences minimum per page – illustrated) 
    • 4th: Seven pages (half-page minimum – illustrated) 
    • 5th: Ten pages (half-page minimum – illustrated)
    •  6th: Ten pages (three-quarter page minimum – illustrated): If the students at this level write full pages, and then have a full page illustration, their total pages should still be ten.
  • All copies should be typed.
  • Write on one side of the paper only.  Pages must be 8 ½ x 11 inches.
  • Illustrations should be black-lined and colored in using colored pencils.
  • Follow margin picture on the back of this page exactly for binding purposes.
  • Number all pages consecutively.
  •  Do not use staple the pages together.
  • If your story is one of the 15 selected, the school will make the necessary copies for you.  The author will get one free copy.  Additional black and white or color books will be available for a fee.  The illustrator (if different than the author) will not get a free copy.
  • Acceptable types of writing include: short stories, plays, poetry, anthology, reports, etc. Follow the above age level requirements.
  • Your original copies will be returned to you after the books are published.
  • Page order as follows: Blank white, title of book with author and illustrator, dedication page (optional), story pages, author’s biography, readers’ comments page, book label, blank white paper.
